The first Finnish newspaper appeared in 1771 and slowly the papers reached their appreciated and traditional place in the Finnish media. Year 2000 the number of Finnish newspapers was 207 and 27 of them appeared every day. The total circulation was 3.228 million copies. This means that the Finnish press reaches more inhabitants than anywhere else in the EU. Worldwide the total circulation is third largest in relation to the population. The biggest newspapers are Helsingin Sanomat, Aamulehti and Turun Sanomat. Many Finns subscribe to home both a local newspaper and the whole country's paper Helsingin Sanomat. The Finnish people read their papers preferably in the morning.
